If your home or business is being pestered by birds and you find that they are causing a massive nuisance it can be tempting to take matters into your own hands however at Total Bird Control we would always advise against this. You don’t want to end up on the wrong side of the law and be prosecuted for making an intervention

The vast majority of wild birds is protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and this protects wild birds, their nests and their eggs. However, there are some notable exemptions to this law. DEFRA (Department of the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs), the governing body of the Wildlife and Countryside Act), recognise that there are some species that do cause a nuisance and that controls need to be put in place to stop the damage and contamination that they can cause.

The species exempt from the law are:

Crow

Dove

Greater Black-backed gull

Lesser Black-backed gull

Herring Gull

Jackdaw

Jay

Magpie

Feral Pigeon

Rook

Wood Pigeon

Canada Goose

This means that under a DEFRA general license, bird controls and measures can be put into place to counteract any problems that they may be causing.

With this said it is still illegal to cause these birds any suffering and only humane methods of bird control will be tolerated. Understanding the legalities of bird control is crucial so that no harm is caused.

Bird Control Problems

From the above list the most common bird control problems occur with gulls and feral pigeons. If either of these species is causing a problem to your property then only the occupier or owner of the building can take action. The action recommended is to call in a professional team who possess a DEFRA licence such as Total Bird Control to take action for you.

At Total Bird Control we have a range of humane methods to help deal with your bird control problem. If you are unsure what type of bird is causing you the issue and want to understand the

legalities of dealing with a bird control problem then please speak to one of our specialist team and we can arrange to survey the situation for you.

Depending on the problem we can deploy preventative measures such as bird spikes or bird netting. We are also experts in humane bird trapping and bird decontamination so for advice about bird control and staying within the law, please do not hesitate to contact us.
